I highly recommend Questioning Heaven, Desiring the Way to anyone who wishes to read something with an evil main character. This story mixes many elements of Xianxia culture with an utterly ruthless protagonist. It isn't a direct journey of a man becoming more potent through different arcs. But a man who gradually unveils a shroud enveloping the cultivation world.
The story is very self-aware, and inside is a dark tale where characters frequently scheme against one another, and the main character constantly plans and plots back. The MC is an old monster, which rids any naivete out of his character, and he does things rationally and heartlessly. Uncovering the truth drives him that he will sacrifice anyone or anything. So, the reader will see the tough decisions he will make throughout the story, which steels his will even more than before - straying from his path is not an option.
The author breaks the 4th wall a few times, speaking of how familiar troupes are just bullshit and explaining how more logical events take place, so you can count on there being no familiar tropes like in other novels.
The world-building is phenomenal, and the main character has a far-reaching goal worth sticking around for. There is a good plot with mysteries, and I am constantly intrigued by the story's progression. It allows the reader to connect the dots seamlessly as you discover the unknown, including the uniqueness of how it all links back to the beginning; other novels cannot do this due to the endless info dumps. Questioning Heaven, Desiring the Way is a book that is far more than worth seeing, with many twists and turns.
