| I Became a God in a Horror Game |
I expected this from I Became a God in a Horror Game: an unlimited-flow version of the super-powered/undefeatable MC trope we all know and love so much, with BL thrown in for some spice.
However, I got trauma, tragedy, found family, and a story that could almost pass as gen for the first 250 chapters. ML starts interacting outside of the rare flashback (he appears in every arc, but it's minimal) at 240ish. That's not to say readers can’t feel his presence; his significance continues to build from the first arc, and by the time he's finally 'introduced,' we have an unmistakable picture of what he means to MC.
The MC is a broken character. He's vicious, brutal, possessive, and quite controlling (usually in a very literal definition.) He desires what he wants and accomplishes anything to obtain it. He also has a near-mechanical purity of purpose of fulfilling his wants that would make him two-dimensional if the writer was any less capable - but this story spotlights exactly how distinct MC and ML are from the rest of the cast.
When the romance finally starts, it's not easy. There are sweet and funny moments, but this isn't the typical unlimited flow where one character definitively dominates the other, even tagged as a power couple. Both MC and ML are complicated people. Both of them don't experience many emotions - so when they do experience them, the feelings can turn violent and out of control.
If you're looking for a romance-centric BL novel, this novel is not it. The story contains plot, character development, and the found family trope. Also, it's different from all the other horror game-based Chinese novels. If you're looking for a satisfying, face-slapping, quick-transmigration-esque story, this isn't it, either. The first two arcs are reminiscent of the genre, but everything afterward is so different in the best way possible.
This fiction surpassed my expectations in every single conceivable way. I highly recommend I Became a God in a Horror Game.
