The Return of The Crazy Demon

The cover picture just describes the MC well; he has a bit of laid-back energy, with a slight smile that you can't tell what he's thinking.

The Return of The Crazy Demon is different because the MC is irreverent and unpredictable, but also because the MC has mental issues, constantly fighting to the death and sometimes killing dozens or even hundreds of people. So this series both pokes fun at Wuxia themes while sometimes, like 10% of the time, also taking them more seriously than most Wuxia novels.

The MC fools around to distance himself from the brutal reality of his life. His initial character arc is of an errand boy constantly beaten down and abused by warriors and criminals until he has enough and becomes the strongest to protect the working man. If you think that is crazy, then that is precisely right, he had a mental breakdown, but also, he is pretty talented. He didn't have a normal upbringing, and no kind master saved him as a child or guided him. He had to rise in a bloody and harsh world, and his mental health suffered further.

The story is in the first person. It's more amusing when he says why someone makes him angry. MC feels like someone who wouldn't be tied down by anything; he is in his world. MC is unique, and this story has so many interesting side characters. Also, the sense of atmosphere/immersion is perfect, too.

The story starts with him regressing after a failure of a sort, and his battle now is to reach his original goal of protecting the commoner while not going insane as before, plus helping other outsiders like himself if he can. Most of the plot is fun, and some laugh-out-loud moments are sprinkled here and there.

The translation isn't excellent. It started okay, but it went down in quality about halfway through. This story is pretty complicated at times, and the translation often doesn't make sense in those instances, or complex conversations are translated with incorrect subject/pronoun assignment.

I've been reading web novels for over a decade; thus far, The Return of The Crazy Demon is one of the best I've ever encountered. The MC is hilarious, the pacing is excellent, and the atmosphere is incredible. If you like crazy protagonists in an ancient Korean setting, try this series.
